About Football at Exeter

The University of Exeter Football Club (EUFC) is the flagship sports club at the university and one of the most competitive football programmes in South West university sport. The men's 1st XI compete in the BUCS South West Premier Division — the highest regional level — with UEFA-qualified coaching staff, video analysis support, and sports science access. Six BUCS teams in total ensure competitive football at every level from elite to recreational. Football's position as the most popular sport at Exeter means EUFC events draw the largest student crowds — the annual varsity is one of the most attended student sporting occasions in the region. The women's programme has grown consistently and is supported by the university's investment in women's sport.

Club History

EUFC is one of the oldest continuously operating clubs at the university with a competitive presence at the top of South West university football throughout its history. The club's challenge for BUCS Premier League promotion (the national top level) in recent seasons reflects sustained investment in coaching quality. Multiple alumni have played at semi-professional National League level and several have moved into coaching at FA licensed academies. The women's programme was formalised in the 2000s and has since grown into one of the stronger South West university women's football programmes.

Joining the Football Club

September trials for all teams across 2–3 sessions. Players assessed at all positions across different game scenarios. 2nd, 3rd, and 4th XI trials follow from those not selected for higher squads — the structure ensures every player has a competitive team. Pre-season fitness is assessed alongside technical quality — arrive in shape. A social 5-a-side programme runs year-round for students who want football without BUCS competitive commitment.

Training

Men's 1st XI: Tuesday and Thursday evenings at Streatham Sports Park under UEFA-qualified coaching staff, 90-minute sessions covering tactical prep, technical work, and small-sided games. Development squads train on different evenings with their respective coaches. BUCS fixtures on Wednesday afternoons — away fixtures require leaving campus by noon. Women's 1st XI trains twice per week with similar structure.

BUCS Competition

Men's 1st XI in BUCS South West Premier Division; development teams in Division 1-3. BUCS fixtures October–April, with top Premier teams advancing to BUCS Premier League promotion playoffs. Women's teams in BUCS Women's South West Conference. EUFC also participates in British Universities Football Association (BUFA) cup competitions supplementing the BUCS calendar.

Tips for Prospective Members

Student Accommodation for Football Players

Pennsylvania Road is the EUFC heartland — multiple generations of squad members have lived on this road and surrounding streets (Thornton Hill, Sylvan Road). Large group houses of 5–8 beds along this corridor regularly house football squad members from multiple teams simultaneously. The community atmosphere is strong — local businesses in the Pennsylvania/St James area are familiar with the football club and the social life is centred here. Booking in October/November of first year is strongly recommended.
