About Triathlon at Exeter
The University of Exeter Triathlon Club is one of the most active multi-sport clubs at the university, competing in BUCS Triathlon and the British Triathlon Federation (BTF) University Series. Devon is widely regarded as one of England's best triathlon training environments — the Exe Estuary for open water swimming, Dartmoor and East Devon for cycling, and the Exe Valley trail network for running combine to give Exeter triathletes a uniquely varied and challenging training environment. The club regularly qualifies athletes for BUCS Triathlon National Finals and has a strong development programme for students who are new to one or more of the three disciplines. The social structure — group rides, aquathlons, duathlons, and parkrun collaborations — makes the club accessible at every level.
Club History
Exeter Triathlon Club has developed significantly since the sport's growth through the 2010s when BUCS and BTF invested heavily in university triathlon. Devon's exceptional terrain was a key competitive advantage from the outset — Exeter triathletes develop on terrain that challenges them far more than competitors training in flatter or less varied environments. The club has consistently produced BUCS and BTF University Series qualifiers, and the open water swimming in the Exe Estuary has been a distinctive training feature that gives Exeter athletes experience unavailable to most UK university clubs.
Joining the Triathlon Club
Open joining — students who do any of the three disciplines (or want to try any of them) are welcome. The club caters for complete beginners to each discipline through duathlon and aquathlon introductory formats. Competitive squad membership for BUCS requires demonstrated ability across all three disciplines. No wetsuit or specialist equipment is required to attend the first sessions.
Training
Swim sessions: early morning at Exeter Riverside (three days per week). Bike sessions: Tuesday morning group ride (60–90km road cycling) and Saturday morning social ride. Run sessions: Tuesday evening interval session (Exeter Arena or campus) and Thursday tempo run. Total weekly training for competitive members is 8–12 hours.
BUCS Competition
BUCS Triathlon South West regional events and BUCS Triathlon National Finals. BTF University Series events nationally. Devon also hosts regional triathlon events (organised by British Triathlon South West region) where club members compete independently. Aquathlon and duathlon events provide entry points for developing triathletes.

Student Accommodation for Triathlon Players
Triathlon students need to consider proximity to multiple training venues — the pool (Exeter Riverside), open roads (Dartmoor and East Devon), and trail running routes (Exe Valley). Pennsylvania Road is the most balanced option — easy bike access to Devon roads, canal towpath running from the door, and reasonable bus links to Riverside. Bike storage is essential — a secure shed or garage is non-negotiable. Specify this requirement to Gillams.
