Volleyball is a major sport in France, Brazil, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, and across Eastern Europe — and Exeter consistently draws experienced players from these countries alongside students who discover the sport at university. BUCS South West volleyball fixtures at the Sports Park sports hall on BUCS Wednesday afternoons are competitive and enthusiastically attended. The club also runs beach volleyball social sessions during the summer term, adding a distinctly different and popular dimension to the club's identity.

Club History

Exeter Volleyball Club has grown significantly in recent years as international student participation increased. The club now fields men's and women's teams in BUCS Division 1 and Division 2, and has the depth to run competitive and development squads simultaneously. Beach volleyball was added to the programme as a summer social activity and has become popular with members who want to maintain fitness and social connection beyond the indoor season.

Joining the Volleyball Club

Open try-outs in September for competitive BUCS squads. Recreational and development players join through open club nights without a formal trial process. Players should bring non-marking indoor court shoes. No prior volleyball experience is needed for recreational membership — the club runs beginners' skill sessions alongside competitive training.

Training

Competitive squads: Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Sports Park sports hall, 7–9pm, covering serve-receive systems, attack patterns, blocking, and defensive positioning. BUCS fixtures on Wednesday afternoons. Recreational sessions on Monday evenings are open to all members. Beach volleyball sessions in the summer term at local outdoor venues.
