About Boxing at Exeter
The University of Exeter Boxing Club is affiliated with England Boxing and competes in BUCS boxing through regional championships and the National Novices' Championships — the primary competition route for students new to the sport. The club combines a genuine competitive pathway with exceptional accessibility: the beginner programme takes students from their first stance to their first competitive bout within a single academic year, and the fitness boxing sessions (open to all members regardless of competitive ambition) have become some of the most popular sport sessions at Streatham Sports Park. All coaches hold England Boxing qualifications, all competitive bouts are sanctioned under England Boxing safety rules, and medical support is present at all fixture events.
Club History
The club established its England Boxing affiliation during the 2010s, coinciding with national investment in university boxing networks. Early competitive success in BUCS Novices' events built the club's reputation and attracted stronger student boxers in subsequent years. The women's section — established deliberately to make boxing accessible to female students — has been particularly successful and has produced regional finalists in women's BUCS boxing. The club's high retention rate from beginner to competitive boxer is a reflection of coaching quality.
Joining the Boxing Club
New members are welcomed at the start of every semester. No experience is required. The beginner programme runs 6–8 weeks of technical work (stance, footwork, combinations, parries, defensive positioning) before any contact practice begins. All protective equipment is provided during the beginner phase. Buying your own gloves (£30–£60) within the first month is strongly recommended. Competitive pathways open after coaches judge a member technically ready, typically 8–12 weeks after starting.
Training
Three sessions per week: Monday (conditioning and technical pad work), Wednesday (sparring for competitive members / skills for beginners), Friday (strength and conditioning, bag work, footwork). Hours are typically 6pm–8pm at the boxing gym within Streatham Sports Park. Competitive members attend all three; fitness-only members typically attend Monday and Friday. Total weekly commitment for competitive boxers is 6 hours plus competition days.
BUCS Competition
Exeter enters BUCS Boxing South West Regional Championships and the BUCS National Novices' Championships. The novices' format is specifically for boxers with fewer than 10 competitive bouts — the primary competition for students who take up boxing at university. All bouts are England Boxing sanctioned with qualified referees, corner officials, and medical support. Exeter also participates in inter-club tournaments with Devon and South West boxing clubs providing additional competitive experience.

Highlights & Alumni
Exeter has produced BUCS South West regional finalists and National Novices' Championship qualifiers. The women's section has reached regional finals with members who started at university with no boxing experience. The club has one of the highest beginner-to-competitive progression rates of any university boxing club in the South West.
Tips for Prospective Members
- Start early in the academic year — competitive development requires months of preparation before a first bout
- Buy your own gloves within the first month — sharing borrowed gloves is unhygienic and limits training quality
- The Novices' format is for beginners — competition is not reserved for experienced boxers
- Women's boxing at Exeter is well-established — female students should not be discouraged by the sport's traditionally male environment
- Pennsylvania Road and St James minimise travel time for evening training ending at 9pm
Student Accommodation for Boxing Players
The boxing gym at Streatham Sports Park makes campus proximity particularly important — evening sessions ending at 9pm mean a short walk home matters for recovery and sleep. Pennsylvania Road and St James are both within 15 minutes walk. Several Gillams properties on Thornton Hill and Pennsylvania Road are popular with boxing club members for their layout (good kitchen and living space for meal prep and recovery) and campus proximity.
