About Judo & Martial Arts at Exeter
The University of Exeter Judo Club is affiliated with the British Judo Association (BJA) and competes in BUCS judo across all weight categories. Alongside judo, Exeter has active clubs for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Karate, Taekwondo, and MMA — all training at the Streatham Sports Park martial arts facilities. This cluster of disciplines creates one of the more comprehensive university martial arts environments in the South West, and cross-training between clubs is common and encouraged. The judo club in particular has a high beginner-to-competitive progression rate, reflecting the quality of BJA-qualified coaching and the club's open-door entry philosophy.
Club History
Exeter Judo Club established its BJA affiliation during the 2010s as part of national investment in university judo development. Early competitive results in BUCS regional championships built the club's reputation. The BJJ club — one of the fastest-growing at Exeter — emerged in the early 2010s and has grown to become one of the larger sports clubs at the university by membership, reflecting BJJ's rapid national rise. Karate and Taekwondo have longer histories at Exeter with fluctuating competitive strength depending on the coaching available each year.
Joining the Judo Club
Judo welcomes all grades — white belt beginners to black belt judoka. Introductory sessions at each semester start cover fundamental technique regardless of prior experience. All clubs provide loaner suits (gi for judo, karate, BJJ; dobok for taekwondo) for beginners. BJJ operates a similarly open-door policy. MMA is most suitable for students with at least one prior martial arts background.
Training
Judo: Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7pm–9pm at the Sports Park martial arts room. BJJ: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings (separate beginner, intermediate, and advanced groups). Karate: Monday and Wednesday evenings. Taekwondo: Tuesday/Thursday lunchtime and Friday evenings. MMA: Wednesday and Saturday. Cross-training between clubs is facilitated through coordinated scheduling.
BUCS Competition
BUCS Judo regional championships and national individual events. Weight categories follow IJF standards. BUCS Karate and Taekwondo run similar national championship events. BJJ members compete independently in UKBJJA and NABBA affiliated events. All BUCS judo bouts are sanctioned under England Judo rules with qualified officials.

Tips for Prospective Members
- Cross-training between clubs is encouraged — BJJ ground work complements judo, and striking arts improve footwork that translates across disciplines
- Get your own gi within the first two weeks — shared loaner gis are unhygienic for contact sports
- BJJ progresses fastest with consistent three-times-per-week attendance — sporadic training produces much slower development
- BUCS Judo competitions are held as full weekend events — the intensity is high, prepare for multiple bouts in one day
- Pennsylvania Road and St James minimise travel time for evening martial arts training — important for clubs that train 3+ times per week
Student Accommodation for Judo Players
Pennsylvania Road and St James are most common — campus proximity is particularly valuable for students cross-training across 3–4 clubs, each of which may train 2–3 times per week. The 7pm–9pm evening schedule for most martial arts means short walk times home are important for recovery.
